Sports Portfolio

Video 1:

a- The photographer is Sam Adams.
b- The general focus of the portfolio is to tell the different stories of the subjects in the photos.
c- Three problems the judges noticed wrong with the portfolio were that some of the photos had mergers, some photos didn't have a set subject and some photos didn't give a clear image of the subject(s).
d- The judges did like the backgrounds of the pictures (but would have shot the actual photos different) and the action in some of the pictures. The judges exclaimed how they wished they could combine two photos- one with a good background and one with a good action shot- to make a good photo.
e-I think the photographer did a sloppy job of capturing photos. Whether it was the composition, focus, meaning, etc. the photos were not put together very well. I like the photographer because you can tell he is trying to take great shots. He is almost there!!

Video 2:

a-The photographer is Alyssa Schukar.
b-The focus of the photos are to show the different lifestyles people live in different places.
c-Three issues the judges noticed were that the photos were all very negative, taken from the same distances, and the photos gave the same feel due to the similar lighting, expressions, moods, tones, etc.
d-The judges liked the pictures that were bright and showed emotion and the optimistic pictures. For example, the baseball celebration picture had good composition, lighting, emotion and optimism.
e-My impressions on this photographer are mixed. For one, her good photos were good. But her darker photos with saddening stories or meanings were very engaging and made me realize that in reality there are many issues. If pictures were only fine and dandy, how would the darkening truths of the world be displayed? I like how she decided to show depressing and ecstatic photos because it shows both sides of our world's 'story'.

Video 3:

a-The photographer is Melissa Golden.
b-The general focus of this photo was on old people and telling their stories. There were also a few photos of different people like firefighters, students, young lovers, etc. The focus in other words was to show people's actions and the deeper meaning of their lives through photos.
c-Three issues the judges noticed were that the photos weren't focused on the most significant subjects, they had extra subjects in the photos that were a distraction, and the photos compositions were just terrible.
d-The photographers liked one of Melissa's portraits for 2 reasons. One, it had the correct focus on the old man's eyes, face, wrinkles, glasses and facial expression Secondly, you were able to see his story through the photo and how he was struggling with sickness and didn't want his life to end because of the loved ones he cherished dearly.
e-I think this photographer had some god photos. I liked the photo she took of the boy and the girl kissing in a public club because it shows the audacity, openness and fierceness of young love.
She did a god job of capturing emotions in her subjects although the compositions weren't always the best.

Video 4:

a-The photographer is Daryl Peveto.
b-The general focus of these photos are to show diverse people and how their environments affect their lives and impact them personally.
c-Three issues the photographers noticed were the 'staged look' in the senior pictures, the unoriginal photo ideas, and the unclear stories the photos told. These three elements made the pictures very basic and hard to understand.
d-Two things the photographers liked were the balances of colors and the specific lighting in the photos that Daryl took.
e-I think that this photographer has a few good shots, and I like his ideas of changing lighting within the pictures to add depth. Like in his church picture and hospital picture, the lighting created a dark and light side to the photo which created a story to tell.

Dustin Snipes Portfolio:

a-Strengths the judges found were that Dustin was good at adding color, composition, being in the moment with the subjects of his photos, his angles of photography and his ability to capture emotions of every subject in the photo.
b-I think Dustin's strengths are being able to be right in the midst of his photo. If his photo is in a sports team huddle, he isn't on the outside! He is close, personal and right next to everyone brewing their emotions . I think his weaknesses are photoshop. If he would leave his photos plain they would look just as good too!

Contest Recap:

In order to pick the winner of the portfolio contest, the judges went through the process of choosing the winner by process of elimination. The judges wanted to award the photographer with the most diverse photos, with good composition and lighting. When it got down to the finals, it also came to editing. Dustin, was a very good editor with no mistakes. All of his photos were solid and good enough to compete with anyone's.

PART 2/ Individual Images:

1. I agree with the judges that the first image of the first video(with a red car) was not dynamic because there was nothing aesthetically wonderful about it but had good elements in it like leading lines and framing. I liked the red color because it gave the image a pop of color.

2. I disagree with the judges on the photo of the girl in the mini swimming pool in the student work category. While the judges think it is worthless, I think it symbolizes something. If the girl is in the pool outside of the pool, it shows that the photographer wants to symbolize something else. Since the judges think the photo is pointless, I had to disagree because the photo is very cool and secluded.
